Soap Making Instructional Video: Melt & Pour Shushi Rolls

My husband is vegan and a big fan of sushi. Recently, he brought home sushi from our favorite Asian deli. Hmmmm.... I started thinking about how I could make sushi soap. The above photo shows the end result.
I used ground Adzuki beans (found in Asian food stores/health food stores), ground oats, and sea salt as exfoliants. Soy protein powder was also added to the mix along with Ginger Lime fragrance oil. I rolled the soap in Nori seaweed which is found in most Asian food stores or the ethnic section of grocery stores.
These soaps display nicely in the clear acetate soap boxes. You can shrink wrap the finished soaps or heat seal inside one of our new Eco Bags (bio-degradable cellulose bags that are Earth-friendly!). Position the finished soaps atop a bed of green paper shred or use with Bento grass.

Here's what you need:
-
Flexible Square Jelly Roll Mold
-
Bamboo Sushi Mat
-
Glass Measuring Cup for melting soap
-
Nori Seaweed (available at health food stores)
-
Ground Oats (1 tablespoon)
-
Soy Protein (optional) 2 teaspoons
-
Sea Salts 2 teaspoons
-
Ground Adzuki Beans 3 teaspoons
-
White melt and pour soap

-
Microwave (for melting soap)
-
Pipettes for adding fragrance
-
Rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle (to remove surface air bubbles from soap)
GETTING STARTED
Step One

Prepare your materials. Grind sea salts, adzuki beans, oats, and soy protein as needed. Place in small containers for easy dispensing. Handle the Nori seawood carefully as it wil tear easily.
Step Two

Cube white soap base and place in glass measuring cup. Heat in microwave in short bursts until melted. Do not overheat.
Step Three

Line the jelly roll pan with the Nori seaweed. Cut the seaweed sheet to fit the pan.
Step Four

Using the wire whisk, incorporate the additives into the melted soap base until completely mixed. Use the pipette to add fragrance oil. We recommend adding 2-3 teaspoons of fragrance oil per pound (approximately 3 pipette draws).
Step Five

Allow soap to set up until slightly thickened. Stir regularly to additives dispersed throughout.
Step Six
Spread soap evenly onto the Nori seawood. Let soap set up until nearly firm, then remove from jelly roll.
Step Seven
Place soap on sushi mat with seawood side facing down.
Roll the soap into a log using the same technique used for rolling sushi.
Step Eight

Carefully cut the sushi roll into slices. A SHARP knife is critical when cutting the outer seaweed wrap. Wrap soap for gift giving. A chinese take-out carton is also a nice way to package the soaps.
